New St. Augustine or Floratam sod can make a Largo lawn look finished almost immediately. The grass is green, the seams are clean, and a tired yard suddenly has a fresh surface. But installation day is only the beginning. During the first few weeks, the sod still has a shallow root system and depends on consistent moisture, good soil contact, and even sprinkler coverage.
That is where many problems begin. A sprinkler controller may be running on schedule while one corner stays dry. A homeowner may add more minutes to every zone when only one head needs adjustment. Or the lawn may stay so wet that the soil becomes soft and the roots do not get the balance of water and air they need.

Pinellas County also provides a new-lawn establishment exemption. The county’s current guidance says proof of new lawn material must be submitted, with specific rules for the first 60 days. Mistake 1: Assuming “The Sprinklers Ran” Means the Sod Was Watered
A running irrigation system does not guarantee uniform coverage. One head may be clogged, tilted, buried too low, blocked by a shrub, or aimed at the driveway. Pressure can also vary between zones.
Walk the lawn while each zone operates. Look for dry corners near sidewalks, curbs, and driveways; narrow strips between sprinkler patterns; heads that do not rise fully; water hitting pavement instead of grass; areas blocked by plants, fences, or bed edges; and one section receiving much more water than the rest.
New sod exposes these weak spots quickly because its roots have not yet grown deeply into the soil. If one section repeatedly dries while the rest stays moist, adding time to the whole zone may waste water without solving the actual coverage gap.
Mistake 2: Watering by Minutes Without Checking the Soil
Controller minutes are not a measurement of how much water reaches the sod. Different nozzles, head spacing, water pressure, soil conditions, sun exposure, and slope can change the result.
Check the lawn itself. The soil beneath the sod should stay moist during establishment, but it should not remain saturated. Lift a corner gently in a few representative areas without disturbing the installation. Compare a sunny edge, a center section, and any area that looks different in color.
If the top looks wet but the soil below is dry, the water may not be reaching the root zone. If the sod feels spongy and water stands on the surface, the area may be receiving too much water or may have a grading or drainage issue. The goal is consistent moisture—not a fixed number of minutes copied from another property.
Mistake 3: Trying to Fix One Dry Spot by Increasing Every Zone
When one strip turns gray-green or the edges begin to curl, the first reaction is often to increase the entire watering schedule. That can leave most of the lawn too wet while the original dry spot still receives poor coverage.
Start with the affected area: run the zone that should cover it; confirm which heads actually reach it; look for a clogged nozzle, low head, bad spray pattern, or obstruction; compare the area with a healthy section on the same zone; and repair or adjust the coverage problem before increasing total run time.
This coverage-first approach is especially important near hard surfaces, narrow side sections, curved bed edges, and small lawn pockets that do not fit a simple sprinkler pattern.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Overspray and Runoff
Water on the sidewalk is not helping the sod. Overspray wastes water and may leave the intended lawn area short. Runoff can also carry soil or loose material away from sod edges before they are fully rooted.
Watch what happens during the full watering cycle. A spray may look correct for the first minute, then begin running toward the street once the soil surface is wet. Sloped areas and compacted sections may need a different approach than flat areas.
If water starts moving off the lawn, do not assume the answer is more time. The zone may need adjustment, shorter cycles where allowed, a nozzle change, or correction of a surface problem. Any change should still comply with the current rules for the property’s water source.
Mistake 5: Treating Sun, Shade, and Heat-Reflective Edges the Same
Not every part of a Largo yard dries at the same rate. Open turf may receive direct sun for much of the day. Sod beside a driveway or sidewalk can face reflected heat. A side yard or area beneath established trees may stay shaded longer and lose moisture more slowly.
A single zone may cover more than one of these conditions. That creates a balancing problem: the sunny edge may dry while the shaded section remains wet. Monitor the different exposure areas instead of judging the entire lawn from one location. Gently check a problem piece. If it sits above the surrounding lawn, rocks when pressed, or has an obvious hollow beneath it, extra watering alone may not correct the issue. The installer may need to reset the piece, correct the surface, tighten a seam, or address a low or high spot. Water supports rooting, but it cannot replace proper surface preparation and contact.
Mistake 7: Continuing the Establishment Schedule After the Sod Has Rooted
UF/IFAS recommends light, frequent watering during the first two to three weeks so the soil remains moist but not overly wet, then tapering once the sod is firmly rooted. The exact schedule still has to follow current local rules and the conditions at the property.
A simple rooting check is to tug gently on several pieces. If the sod lifts easily, roots have not attached well. If it resists lifting, rooting has begun. Once the lawn is established, continuing a high-frequency schedule can encourage shallow rooting, waste water, and contribute to overly wet conditions. The transition should be based on actual rooting and site conditions, not simply a calendar date.
Mistake 8: Waiting Too Long to Investigate a Changing Area
New sod can change quickly. Edges may curl, seams may widen, or one section may fade before the rest of the lawn shows stress. Waiting several days to see whether the problem fixes itself can make recovery harder.
Inspect the lawn daily during the early establishment period. Pay attention to gray-green color before full browning; curled or crispy edges; sod pieces that lift easily; standing water or soft soil; mushy or discolored areas; dry strips that match sprinkler gaps; and seams opening between pieces.
The pattern matters. A straight dry strip may suggest a coverage gap. A low, wet pocket may point to grading or excessive water. Scattered patches could have several causes and may need a lawn or irrigation assessment.
A Simple Daily Check for the First Few Weeks
A practical inspection does not need to take long. Look across the lawn for color differences. Check sunny edges and narrow sections first. Feel the soil below the sod in more than one location. Run any questionable irrigation zone and watch the full pattern. Confirm water stays on the lawn instead of pavement. Note areas that remain wet long after the rest begins drying. Check whether several sod pieces are beginning to resist a gentle tug. Keep the controller aligned with current restrictions and any approved establishment exemption.
This gives you better information than changing the timer based on appearance alone.
When to Request an Irrigation Repair or Lawn Assessment
Call for help when a head is broken, a valve does not operate correctly, pressure appears weak, one zone misses part of the lawn, water pools repeatedly, or the sod continues declining even though the schedule seems appropriate.
A good assessment should separate three questions: Is the controller schedule permitted and appropriate for the establishment stage? Is water reaching the entire lawn evenly? Are soil contact, grading, shade, or another site condition contributing to the problem? Solving the right problem matters. More water does not repair a broken head, improve poor soil contact, or correct a low spot.
Protect the Investment After Installation
The best watering plan is not the one with the most minutes. It is the one that keeps new sod consistently moist during establishment, responds to actual site conditions, follows current local rules, and tapers as roots attach.
