New St. Augustine or Floratam sod needs more than an open space to cover. It needs a prepared surface that supports close soil contact, even grades, clean edges, and reliable irrigation coverage. That is why removing the old lawn is not simply a demolition step. It is the stage when hidden conditions become visible and when many installation problems can still be corrected. For Largo homeowners, this inspection guide explains what to look for after the worn-out turf comes up and before the new sod goes down. CHECK THE CURRENT WATERING RULES BEFORE REMOVING ANYTHING A lawn should not be stripped until the replacement timing and establishment plan are clear. Residents who do not receive water from Pinellas County Utilities should verify the correct schedule with their own supplier. Restrictions can change, and an old controller program or previous exemption should not be treated as current approval. WHY INSTALLING OVER OLD TURF CREATES PROBLEMS Old grass may look flat after it is cut short, but it can still leave behind living runners, roots, thatch, weeds, and uneven organic material. Placing new sod over that layer can make the new pieces sit too high beside hard surfaces, prevent consistent soil contact, hide high and low areas, make grading less predictable, leave irrigation heads at the wrong height, bridge sod seams over soft spots, and allow weeds or unwanted turf to reappear. The goal is not to remove a specific depth from every property. The goal is to expose a stable surface that can be evaluated and prepared for the new lawn. Soil conditions, root density, grade, and equipment can change how much material must be removed. FIRST DIAGNOSE WHY THE EXISTING LAWN DECLINED Removing old turf does not correct the original cause of failure. Before the lawn is stripped, document sprinkler gaps, broken or obstructed irrigation components, wet areas, full-sun decline, shade-related thinning, compaction, confirmed turf pests or disease, mowing damage, and uneven grades. Take photographs before demolition because the pattern may be harder to reconstruct once the old turf is gone. 1. CONFIRM THE EXACT REMOVAL BOUNDARY Mark the turf to be removed, healthy grass to remain, landscape bed edges, hard surfaces, irrigation heads, visible valve boxes, roots or features needing protection, equipment access routes, and the line where new sod will meet existing turf. For partial renovations, place the transition where the remaining turf is healthy and the new sod can meet a clean, stable edge. 2. PROTECT THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM DURING REMOVAL Before stripping the lawn, run each relevant zone when allowed, flag visible heads and valve boxes, record existing damage, identify weak coverage, and turn the system off during removal unless it is needed for an attended test. After removal, recheck whether heads need to be raised, lowered, straightened, or moved before sod installation. 3. REMOVE THE TURF AND PROBLEM ORGANIC LAYER Inspect for mats of old roots or thatch, long St. Augustine runners, clumps of weeds, soft organic piles, debris, ridges from equipment, and depressions where equipment cut too deeply. A few root fragments are different from leaving an intact old lawn beneath the new one. Avoid unnecessary excavation that would leave the finished lawn too low. 4. REVIEW THE GRADE AFTER THE LAWN IS OPEN Look for low pockets, high spots, soil sloping toward structures, sharp drops beside pavement, runoff channels, uneven bed transitions, and areas where soil changes affected sprinkler height. The surface should follow the intended grade without avoidable humps, holes, or abrupt edges. 5. CHECK THE EXPOSED SOIL Compare several areas. Look for sealed or compacted soil, debris or rock, roots affecting grade, inconsistent looseness, areas where water moves differently, and places needing additional preparation around irrigation repairs. Soil amendments or added soil should have a clear site-specific purpose rather than being applied automatically. 6. INSPECT HARDSCAPE AND BED TRANSITIONS Plan the finished elevation beside sidewalks, driveways, curbs, patios, stepping stones, drains, edging, beds, and existing turf. New sod has thickness. If the surface is too high, the lawn may sit above pavement and be scalped; if too low, the edge may become recessed and awkward to maintain. 7. MAKE SURE REMOVED MATERIAL LEAVES THE WORK AREA Confirm turf debris is collected, loose clumps are removed, hard surfaces are clear, irrigation components remain visible, bed edges are not buried, and the delivery path remains accessible. Leftover material can hide unfinished edges and interfere with the final inspection. 8. PERFORM A PRE-SOD WALKTHROUGH Before the sod arrives, confirm the removal boundary matches the scope, no intact old turf remains, irrigation is identified and protected, known coverage problems are addressed, debris and unstable material are removed, high and low areas were reviewed, the soil is ready for close contact, hardscape transitions account for sod thickness, delivery timing is coordinated, and current establishment-watering requirements have been verified. PARTIAL REMOVAL OR FULL LAWN RENOVATION? Partial removal may make sense when damage is isolated, surrounding St. Augustine remains healthy, and the cause has been corrected. A wider renovation may be more practical when thin or mixed turf continues through most of the lawn, weed-filled gaps connect damaged areas, repeated patches have created uneven grades, irrigation corrections affect the full work area, the remaining grass lacks a stable edge, or the old surface needs to be regraded as one connected area. WHAT OLD TURF REMOVAL DOES NOT GUARANTEE Thorough removal creates a better starting point, but it does not replace correct irrigation coverage, suitable sod selection, adequate sunlight, proper timing, tight seams, close soil contact, establishment monitoring, compliance with watering restrictions, proper mowing, or confirmed pest and disease control. QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE APPROVING THE PREPARED SITE Was all unwanted turf removed? Were thick thatch, weeds, and debris removed? Did the exposed soil reveal new problems? Were irrigation heads located and tested? Were damaged heads or coverage gaps corrected? Does the grade work with pavement and beds? Will the sod sit at a practical finished elevation? Is delivery coordinated for prompt installation? Have current watering requirements been verified? Who will monitor the lawn during establishment? BUILD THE NEW LAWN FROM THE SURFACE UP Old-turf removal is easy to overlook because the finished lawn eventually covers it. But the exposed surface determines how well the installer can grade the area, protect irrigation, fit the sod, and create close contact with the soil.
